What is the Biblical Rope?

You’ve probably read a Bible story and wondered how it connects to the rest. Maybe you’ve heard a sermon and thought, “That was good, but where does this fit in the bigger picture?” The Biblical Rope is a simple, visual framework that helps you see how every passage connects to the one story of Scripture and how all of it points to Jesus.
The Biblical Rope is a framework for reading Scripture through five strands: Identity, Kingdom, Presence, Promise, and Wisdom. It also includes five Covenant Knots and seven Milestone Beads that hold the story together. Together, they help you see the Bible as one unified story of rescue.
So what are the five strands? How do the Covenant Knots and Milestone Beads work? And how does this change the way you read your Bible or teach it to others? Here’s how the Biblical Rope works, and why it matters.
Why We Need a Framework
Most of us learn the Bible in fragments. A story here. A verse there. A sermon on Sunday. A devotional on Tuesday. But we rarely see how it all fits together.
The State of the Bible 2026 report found that only 17% of Americans are “Scripture Engaged” meaning Scripture shapes their daily decisions, relationships, and view of God. Another 28% are in the “Movable Middle” –curious, but not deeply connected. One reason for that gap? People don’t see the big picture. They read the Bible like a collection of disconnected stories instead of one unified narrative.

The Strands: 5 Themes Woven through Scripture
The first part of the Bible Rope is the Strands…five themes that run through the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. They are woven together like a rope, each one strengthening the others. Each strand answers a core question.

When you read a passage, ask: Which strand is most visible here? A Psalm might be heavy on Wisdom. A prophecy might be heavy on Promise. A Gospel story might show Presence. The strands help you see the thread.
The Covenant Knots: 5 Promises that Hold the Story Together
The second part of the Bible Rope is the Covenant Knots…five covenants God made with His people. These are the knots that hold the rope together. Without them, the story unravels. Each one builds on the one before it and points to Jesus.

Every covenant points forward to Jesus. He is the offspring of Abraham. He is the true Israel. He is the Son of David. He inaugurates the New Covenant in His blood. When you read a passage, ask: Which covenant is this connected to? How does it point to Jesus?
The Milestone Beads: 7 Turning Points in God’s Plan
The third part of the Bible Rope is the Milestone Beads…seven major turning points that mark God’s unfolding plan. These are the moments where the story shifts and are frequently alluded to throughout Scripture.

When you read a passage, ask: Where does this fit in the story? Which milestone is this connected to?
How the Three Work together
The Strands, the Covenant Knots, and the Milestone Beads aren’t separate. They work together like a rope.
Think of it this way. The Milestone Beads are the when. They mark the timeline of the story. The Covenant Knots are the what. They mark the promises God made along the way. The Strands are the who and why. They show the themes that run through all of it.
When you read a passage, you can use all three:
- Where does this fit? (Milestone Bead)
- What promise is connected? (Covenant Knot)
- Which theme is shining? (Strand)
This is what it means to read Scripture as one story. You’re not just reading isolated verses. You’re reading the story of God’s rescue, and you’re seeing how every part connects.
Why this Matters for Kids
The Biblical Rope isn’t just for adults. It’s for children, too.
When kids learn the Bible as a collection of disconnected stories, they can grow up thinking the Bible is a book of moral lessons. Be like David. Don’t be like Jonah. Try to be good. But that’s not the point of Scripture.
When kids learn the Bible as one story with Strands, Knots, and Beads, they grow up seeing God’s plan. They see that every story points to Jesus. They see that they’re part of the story, too.
